Nicole Durham, was born in Beidigheim, Germany, and moved to Texas where she became a US citizen. Daughter to a German mother and African American father, Nicole’s international exposure and travels helped influence and mold her love for the arts through the vision and upbringing of a multi-ethnic perspective home. Nicole utilizes caulk as her primary medium of choice. The nontraditional medium is an industrial, and far more obstinate, material than traditional acrylic products, reconnecting Nicole with ambitious emotions of endurance and sacrifice. Nicole thrives in the struggle, the determination, and the persistence that pressing and sculpting with caulk provides. The nontraditional medium, allows Nicole to blend craft with fine art, elevating what has often been seen as domestic or marginalized work into the realm of powerful, personal expression. The obstinate material draws out the ambiguity of privileged creating, awarding viewers with dramatic relief and multi-level linear experiences. Nicole’s exploration into the nontraditional medium has awarded her multiple exhibition opportunities to include “best in show” for Greyscale at The Ardest Gallery in Houston, Texas. Nicole is currently a founding member of an all-women’s artist collective, called Tenacious Artists founded in 2023; completing their first group show, Elements of Contrast (June 2024). Nicole is currently working on a new series titled, The Weights Of Women with pieces on display in group exhibitions at the Camp Gallery (FL), The District Gallery (TN), and Girls Who Paint (MD).
